Mr. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Mars Hill College, where his primary saxophone professors were Dr. Daniel Schmidt, and Mr. Matthew Hebert.  Mr. Murphy earned a Master of Music Education degree from UNC Greensboro, where he studied privately with Dr. Steven Stusek. Mr. Murphy has also studied and collaborated with Dr. Lee Patrick, Professor of Saxophone, Emeritus, Transylvania University. Those collaborations include a successful weekend saxophone clinic geared at teaching school-age saxophonists proper technique, exposing them to large ensemble saxophone repertoire and coaching them in chamber music. This weekend clinic ran successfully for thirteen years.

Mr. Murphy spent two seasons playing with the North Carolina Saxophone Ensemble, performing at the Navy International Saxophone Symposium. Mr. Murphy is in his eighteenth year teaching music in the public schools of Forsyth County. He is currently the Orchestra Director and Assistant Band Director at Atkins Academic and Technology High School, in Winston Salem. When he is not teaching or playing saxophone, Mr. Murphy can be found paddling the steep creeks of the southeast in his specialty whitewater canoe.
