Who We Are

The Piedmont Wind Symphony (PWS) traces its roots, as the city’s first professional wind ensemble, to 1990 with the dedicated support of civic leaders, businesses and academic institutions. PWS employs professional musicians under a per service agreement. Many of our musicians hold master’s and doctorate degrees in music and have extensive performing experience both at home and abroad. Also, many PWS musicians are active as educators both at the collegiate and public/private school levels.

Education is a core component of the Piedmont Wind Symphony mission. We believe that through the attainment of knowledge from early and continued musical experiences, the enrichment, enhancement, entertainment, and lifelong enjoyment of music is increased, thereby improving an individual’s quality of life. Throughout its history, PWS has maintained a strong commitment to enhancing education and is excited to enter a new chapter of our history that builds upon this focus to pursue new educational opportunities in the future. We also know that cultural education can take place at any age and PWS programs are committed to reaching all age groups.

With performances from October through June, PWS presents Classics concerts, a Holiday Pops with world-renowned artists, and a Student Side-By-Side concert each season. Now under the direction of new Artistic Director & Conductor, Maestro Matthew Troy, PWS has experienced an exciting transformation in his first year at the helm. This transformation is seen in a dramatic increase in artistic quality and programming, a new executive director, new sponsorship, and a focus on board leadership and development.

Maestro Troy is one of the most versatile and active conductors in America today. He has conducted extensively throughout the United States for a wide variety of symphonic performances during his career. He has appeared on the podiums of many of our country’s major orchestras including Rochester, North Carolina, Oklahoma City, Portland, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Salisbury, UNC School of the Arts, and more. Maestro Troy was recently selected to conduct the Oklahoma All-State Orchestra for 2016.

Throughout the years, PWS has performed a diverse selection of music with many different stars. These stars include Arturo Sandoval, Neil Sadaka, Paul Anka, Kenny G, Maynard Ferguson, Dionne Warwick, Ernie Watts, Frederick Fennell, AMERICA, and many others. PWS is excited to be planning our next season, which will feature numerous innovative performances and new community partnerships. The 2015-2016 season promises concert offerings that are authentic, engaging, and completely unique in the Winston-Salem and Triad communities.
